GREG (GREGGIE) QUIRKE
In the absence of a minor soccer program this inductee honed his skills in the meadows up the harbour. In the mid 60s he entered competitive soccer with the Junior Laurentians and quickly graduated to the Senior level of play. As a member of the Senior Laurentians he won numerous championships at the Burin Peninsula, Provincial, and Atlantic levels.
He has also played in a number of Canadian National Challenge Cup tournaments with his beloved Laurentians coming close a couple of times to winning it all.
This player started off as a left winqer and throughout his career has played at all positions. He is still active today at the Masters level.
His greatest contribution to the game is his determination and his 1OO% plus effort not only in games but also in practices.
This inductee has also given something back to the game by serving on the exective of the St. Lawrence Soccer Association holding numerous positions from Director to Vice-President.
He is a Class III referee and has a Level II Theory Certificate in Coaching and has coached at the minor and Senior level.
His two regrets are ending his senior playing days too soon since it meant only playing one season with his son, Greg Jr and secondly having to face the inevitable that his playing career at any level must come to an end.
Durinq his Senior days he had received many individual awards but probably his greatest award was a team award - being a member of the Team of the Decade for the 1970's.
His dedication to perfection and tenacity on the field of play was an inspiration to those who came after him. Those characteristics are what makes a player great and above all worthy to be inducted into the SL Lawrence Soccer Hall of Fame
